Small Arkansas newspaper gets public service journalism format off the ground
Related Stories
A small GateHouse Media newspaper in Arkansas has made one of the GateHouse News & Interactive Division's public service journalism formats work.
The Stuggart Daily Leader has launched "Spotlight on Stuggart," a Q&A feature on the paper's opinion page that answers a pressing issue impacting residents.
In the GateHouse Media Newsroom Handbook this feature is called "Your Questions Answered." Download the Newsroom Handbook here.
The Arkansas daily offers this feature weekly. Read the feature here.
Here's a recent question that the paper featured: What is the “noise ordinance” in Stuttgart and when was it implemented?
The newspaper then answered questions like how loud can your car stereo by when driving, what does "plainly audible' mean and who decides if the law is broken?
Likely the newspaper covered this story, but this format lays out the specifics of the story quite clearly for the reader.
Lesley Valadez, the paper’s editor said the feature is part of a drive to make the opinion page more of a reader-friendly desitination.
“Based on the success of the feature, I have a month in advance worth of questions from the community,” she said. “Also, the addition of rotating local columns by our staff and editorials have garnered some participation.”
