Update: Reporter writes detailed story explaining how online comments closed book on tragedy
Related Stories
Last week, we told you about a unique situation at The Record Herald, a GateHouse Media newspaper in Pennsylvania, where story comments helped provide closure to a 1914 tragedy.
There's an update to the story.
The newspaper wrote a story last week on the fact that a photo of the only officer to be killed in the line of duty of the local police department, was being restored. The reporter asked some questions about what the photo meant to local officers and wrote a piece about the restoration and the impact the photo had on officers. Once the story hit the Web, the great-grandaughter of one of the the officer's murderers posted an apology in the comments section to the family of the officer.
If you missed the post last week about the story, you can catch up here.
This week, reporter Denise Bonura explained to readers how story comments actually closed the book on this tragedy. Read it here.
Lots of nice comments are posted, including this one: " Thank You Denise for this lovely article. You have been the catylist for the closure on this trajic event between the Barnes/Daywalt families."
This story is a terrific example of the power of local journalism and what inquisitive questions and follow up can mean for a family and community.
