Michigan daily wins national awards for printing quality

The Daily Telegram recently achieved three national awards for printing quality in the 2010 Inland Press Association/Southern Lithoplate Print Quality Competition, including one for “best in show.”


This week, Dale Brendel, former general manager for the Independence Examiner in Independence, Mo., took over his new role as general manager and executive editor for the Levenworth Times (Kan.).

Steve Curd, publisher for the Examiner since 2007, was brought on for the same position at the Times. Curd will also continue his duties as publisher in Independence, which, like The Times, is owned by GateHouse Media.

Curd said he was excited about the new possibilities the restructuring opens up.

GH staffer wins national award

Jillian Fennimore, a staffer with the Cambridge Chronicle in Massachusetts, has been named Reporter and Journalist of the Year by Suburban Newspapers of America.

Newton Kansan publisher takes over McPherson Sentinel

Newton Kansan Publisher Ken Knepper has been named publisher of The McPherson Sentinel newspaper, effective March 8.

The promotion means Knepper will be publisher at both newspapers.

Sentinel Publisher Gary Mehl is retiring in March.

Both papers are owned by GateHouse Media based in New York.

Also, McPherson Sentinel advertising manager Joni Regnier has accepted the advertising manager responsibilities for the Kansan.


Gregory Mathis has been appointed editor-in-chief for the South unit of GateHouse Media New England, which publishes the Kingston Reporter and its WickedLocalKingston.com Web site.

Mathis will be responsible for editorial leadership for the entire South unit, which includes 28 newspaper titles and 36 Web sites produced out of offices in Marshfield, Plymouth and Raynham.


The Peoria Journal Star, a GateHouse daily in central Illinois, has been awarded three big honors.

The Journal Star was named Illinois Associated Press Member of the Year at the AP’s annual awards banquet and won the Illinois Press Association’s sweepstakes award for most total points in the IPA awards. Reporter Andy Kravetz won the Abraham Lincoln Media Award from the Illinois Bar Association.

All of the awards were announced during the annual Associated Press awards dinner and Illinois Press Association awards luncheon, held in Peoria on October 8-9.

Neosho Daily News earns General Excellence award

The staff of the Neosho Daily News earned the General Excellence award in Class 2 — small-medium sized daily newspapers — in the annual Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

The Neosho Daily News took top honors in General Excellence, which judges three separate editions of the entire newspaper, ahead of the Camdenton Lake Sun and the Fulton Sun.


Brian Nanos named news editor of the Beacon-Villager

GateHouse Media Massachusetts announces the appointment of Brian Nanos as news editor of the Beacon-Villager.

Nanos, who joined the Beacon-Villager staff on Sept. 28, brings a spectrum of journalism experience to the position. Most recently he has been a reporter with the Scituate Mariner, also a GateHouse weekly newspaper, covering general news both in print and online for the South Shore community.

Messenger Post Media, a group of several GateHouse Media weeklies and a daily newspaper in Western New York, have been reconginzed for their "postive press" campgian.
